Directly Proportional

Directly Proportional Directly proportional means two variables that increase or decrease at the same time. If two variables are proportional if a change in one variable is accompanied by a change in another variable. We can also say that if two quantities are said to be in proportional then one quantity is a constant multiple of other quantity. Two quantities a and b are said to be directly proportional, if the relationship can be written as a = k b where k is a proportionality constant. Problem 1: The term A is directly proportional to x. And when A is 12, x is 4. Find the value of A when x is 10. Solution: Since A is directly proportional to x. = This can be written as A = k x, where k is proportionality constant. = Given When A is12, x is 4 = Find out constant from the known values A = k x = 12 = k * 4 = By dividing 4 on both sides, we get k = 3 = When x is 10 then A = k x = 3 * 10 = 30 = Therefore, when x is 10 the value of A is 30. Problem 2: A term Y is directly proportional to the square of x. And when Y is 24, x is 2. Find the value of Y when x is 5. Solution: Given Y is directly proportional to x^2. = So, Y = k x^2 = Substitute the given values (Y= 24, x = 2) = Y = k x^2 = 24 = k* 2^2 = 24 = k * 4 = Dividing by 4 on both sides we get k = 6 = When x = 5 then Y = k x^2 = 6 * 5^2 = 6 * 25 = 150 = Therefore, when x is 5 then the value of y is 150.

Students Paying More For Education

Students Paying More For Education Colleges across the nation are aggregately experiencing decreases in federal budget money for instruction. These figures are met by increased spending on administrative costs, according to an article in The New York Times. These figures are taken from a recent study from colleges and universities reports to the federal government. Students are paying more, and a greater share of the costs, but are arguably getting less, Jane Wellman, the executive director of the Delta Project on Postsecondary Education Costs, Productivity and Accountability, told The New York Times. The Delta Project aims to maintain the quality of education, while still keeping the cost affordable performed this study on the costs of college. The study discovered that college tuition has risen significantly, but universities claim that tuition does not cover much of what it actually costs for education. However, the study also found that students are paying for a much larger portion of their tuition, according to The New York Times. In 2006, students paid for about 50% of their education and some other fees, which has risen from 40% in 2002. These figures are for public institutions and research universities. Budgets for instructors affiliated with private and public institutions have decreased. Budgets for public research institutions have decreased from 64.4% to 63% from 1995 to 2006, and they have decreased from 52.8% to 50.2% for public universities. Budgets going to instructors at private research institutions have had the biggest impact. They have decreased from 62.3% in 1996 to 57.9% in 2006, according to The New York Times. However, the percentages spent on administration and support have increased. Tuition has risen at faster than spending. We see the picture ahead being more of the same, but dramatically more of the same, Wellman told The New York Times.

Critical Reasoning Question 6-Artistic Expression - Private Tutoring

Critical Reasoning Question 6-Artistic Expression BobbiM Feb 7, 2014 The extent to which society is really free can be gauged by its attitude toward artistic expression.  Freedom of expression can easily be violated in even the most outwardly democratic societies.  When a government arts council withholds funding from a dance performance that its members deem obscene, the voices of a few bureaucrats have in fact censored the work of the choreographer, thereby committing the real obscenity of repression. Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the argument above? A.  Members of government arts councils are screened to ensure that their beliefs reflect those of the majority. B.  The term obscenity has several different definitions that should not be used interchangeably for rhetorical effect. C.  Failing to provide financial support for a performance is not the same as actively preventing or inhibiting it. D.  The councils decision could be reversed if the performance were altered to conform to public standards of appropriateness. E.  The definition of obscenity is something on which most members of a society can agree. Think you know the answer? The correct answer is C. The author equates the withholding of government funding with censorship.  (C), which denies that theyre the same thing, destroys the argument.  (A) is irrelevant.  That the councils actions may reflect majority opinion wouldnt justify what the author considers censorship-her definition isnt dependent on what most people think.  (B) complains that the term obscenity is used ambiguously, but its the term censorship thats the problem here.  (D) misses the whole point; in the authors view, denial of funding amounts to censorship, and (D) simply reaffirms this.  And (E), like (A), points to majority opinion, but since the author never denies that most people can agree on whats obscene, this is beside the point.

Specialized Preparation Needed for the SAT Chemistry Subject Test

Specialized Preparation Needed for the SAT Chemistry Subject Test ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog Students who decide to take the SAT Chemistry subject test generally feel that they are well suited for the test because they are doing well in the high school chemistry course they are taking at their high school. What I have found though is that they may not be aware of the specialized preparation that is needed in order to get a top score on the exam beyond their study for the course they are taking at school. There are several reasons for the need for specialized preparation for the exam. This article explains what those are and what the student can do to be better prepared for the test. The SAT test is more comprehensive than the typical high school course. The SAT chemistry test draws questions from all topics that are found in the typical high school chemistry textbook. However, the typical high school chemistry course rarely covers all topics in the textbook being used due to lack of time in the school year. For this reason students who are preparing to take the SAT test typically find there are questions on topics that they have not studied during the chemistry course they are taking at school. Therefore students find that it is wise to take a diagnostic practice test when they start prepping for the SAT test to find topics they are not well prepared for. Then students can study those chemistry topics that they have not covered in the classroom using one of the specialized study guides for the SAT chemistry exam. Nowadays these can be found online as well as in hard copy. Relationship analysis questions on the SAT chemistry test Besides the typical multiple choice questions that are found in most standardized exams, the SAT chemistry test has a unique type of questions that is not found on any other type of chemistry test. These are called relationship analysis questions. Students will not have encountered this type of question previously, so they require specific study to be able to consistently answer them well. Each question consists of two statements.First, students must decide separately whether each statement is true or false. Then if both statements are judged to be true, then they must decide whether the second statement is a good explanation of why the first statement is true.If it is, then the student fills in the CE oval on the answer sheet.CE stands for Correct Explanation. It takes quite a bit of practice to become proficient at answering this type of question, so practice answering this type of question is an important part of preparing for the SAT chemistry test. Calculators are not allowed on the SAT chemistry test. In the typical high school chemistry course students are allowed to use scientific or more advanced types of calculators to do the calculations required on the exams for their courses. However, no calculators are allowed to be used to answer the questions on the SAT chemistry exam. Because of this fact, students preparing for the SAT chemistry exam need to practice answering the questions requiring calculations without the benefit of a calculator.Though the arithmetic on the SAT exam is generally not difficult, it can be challenging for students who have become used to doing all of the calculations on a calculator for their coursework. Knowledge of unfamiliar lab equipment Lastly, the SAT chemistry test may include questions that refer to lab equipment and procedures that students have not had the opportunity to use in their high school courses.Typically, the experiments done in high school chemistry courses vary greatly, and the lab equipment used may also vary widely between schools. Therefore, students will need to do some research about lab procedures and equipment that they have not encountered in their high school courses in order to be prepared for questions on the SAT exam that refer to this equipment. Conclusion Based on these unique aspects of the SAT chemistry exam, students who plan to take the exam should expect to spend at least a couple of months of specialized preparation for the exam besides their usual study for their coursework. Taking a diagnostic practice exam at the beginning of their preparation for the SAT exam will be very important in planning a course of study that will lead to a high score on the test. Decoding an Odd Number Score on your SAT or ACT Essay

Decoding an Odd Number Score on your SAT or ACT Essay 3 Possible Reasons For An Odd Number Score on your SAT or ACT Essay Many students dont understand the scoring system of the SAT or ACT essays and, although the formatting of the essays are different, the grading of the essays are virtually the same talk about this with your Orange County ACT tutor before taking the test. Two graders will read their essay and their final score will be out of 12. Each grader will give a score between 0 and 6. It makes sense that most graders would give the same score but some have differing opinions. This is where the odd number scoring comes into play (READ: February ACT Study Timeline: 7 Steps to Success). A lot of students shoot for a score between 10 and 12 on their essay. A score of 10 or higher is very impressive and can put students into an entirely new category of writing skills. So what happens if the student gets a 9? This means that one grader assigned a score of 4 and the second assigned a score of 5. Receiving an 8 â€" meaning both graders gave a 4 â€" is a decent score. However, achieving a 10 would be much safer for college admissions. So how can a student improve if one grader thought their essay was above average and the second thought their essay was near excellent? Although, of course, we cant speak to these graders personally, as educators and students we can make a good guess. 1. One of the graders is picky about punctuation and spelling and the other is not Although graders follow a very strict grading rubric they are permitted to use their expertise to some degree. Some graders are extremely picky on spelling and punctuation errors while others will find that, if the content and flow are excellent, a spelling error here or there is not the end of the world. So how can a student fix that? Its safe to assume that any particular grader will be picky about spelling, which means that a student who received a score of 9 should be absolutely sure that their punctuation and spelling are up to par. They can review this on their own or with a tutor (READ: Cracking the ACT Science Section). 2. The essay may have contained clichés Some graders are not concerned with reading about the same content over and over again while others get bored very quickly. Students who are using common historical examples such as the Civil War, World War II, or the Civil Rights Movement may consider finding additional things to write about on the SAT. If the grader is reading about the Civil War in 300 essays in one day, they may grade an essay down for lack of originality. The solution for SAT students is to make a list of multiple yet lesser-known historical events that they can write about when they take their test again. 3. The student didn’t use enough varied vocabulary Many students do not use as much varied vocabulary as they should, especially on the ACT. ACT students are given a more real life (often easier to write about) prompt, but they still have to use impressive vocabulary to break a 10 (READ: 5 Reasons Students Should Blog). One grader may find that two or three impressive words and varied structure is enough while another grader may not be impressed. Students can cope with this issue by spending a couple of hours on Thesaurus.com. Knowing the correct synonyms for many basic words can help them develop more impressive yet appropriate vocabulary on their next essay. It is recommended that students make a list of about 10 words, 3 positive words (such as “happy”), 3 negative words (such a “sad”), and 3 additional adjectives that are used in everyday language (such as “interesting”). They can then find multiple synonyms and antonyms for all of these words and memorize them to use on their next essay. Students who have an odd score on their essay, especially if it’s a 9, should work diligently on their own or consult their tutor to see if theres any way they can get that score up to 10. As far as many colleges and universities are concerned, the biggest, and most impressive, jump is between a 9 and 10. Dont hesitate to book your private Orange County ACT or SAT tutor this winter! italki Learns (about) Esperanto

italki Learns (about) Esperanto Saluton! This week italki is trying out a new language. We decided to focus on esperanto the constructed language created in 1887.   Why esperanto, rather than any other conlang? Well, first of all, we’ve recently sponsored a language meet-up in Germany, based entirely around esperanto: International Youth Congress (IJK). We saw around 300 young people get together in Wiesbaden to practice esperanto, listen to lectures, and get their 100ITC voucher.   Besides simply showing support to the esperantists of the world, we are involved in the event  and  are involved  in the esperanto community because esperanto learners need support. The fate of the lone esperantist can be difficult. There are many reasons to learn this language: it is fast and easy to learn it has minimal exceptions which by extension means it lets you practice the formal logic behind language, any language, in a very hands-on way and it is the gateway language to become a polyglot   (thats a talk by an italki teacher, Tim Morley  for  TEDx) you get to travel the world with the support of the community (couchsurfing-style community organization that dates back to the 1970-ies!) but, it still seems that esperanto is seen as an odd hobby. There are very few native speakers, and this language, though built on a beautiful dream, has not found as much traction as its creator probably hoped. It is, however, a very useful language to learn. We are actively looking for esperanto teachers, and are doing everything we can to support the community. The most important issue that the lone esperantist has is the lack of speakers with whom to practice day-to-day. Though IJK, polyglot gatherings, and other events help to build community, many esperantists get to meet and practice the language in person. Thats great, but once the language enthusiasts disperse, there is often difficulty in practicing the language in a natural environment. Sure, there is media out there to support esperanto learning. We feel that practice, one-on-one, is the best way to learn or keep up a language, so we have decided to put some effort behind building the esperanto community online, on italki. In the spirit of support for the esperanto community, we have decided to take a few esperanto lessons with our teachers. italki, meet esperanto! First, esperanto tutor  Teddy  presented a Chinese version for Chinese speakers in the office, and later that week, we gathered again for the English version delivered by esperanto teacher  Tim. Teddy Nee, who runs  Nees Language Blog  and the author of two  italki Articles on esperanto, described the basics of esperanto grammar, including descriptions of the different parts of speech, plurals, and use of the accusative.   Tim Morley (mentioned above for his TEDX talk)  gave us a fascinating description of worldwide esperanto community events and organizations such as the World Congress, IJK, and Pasporta Servo. Members of six cultures and speakers of so many  languages, tried to get the basics of this cool language while in our office. Sometimes we just like to take a step back and look at how awesome the future is.   #learning #esperanto with Tim, a new Esperanto teacher www.italki.com/teacher/1593413 #projectorposing #stafflovelearning #newfaces #languagesforever #italki #workperks #languages A photo posted by Italki (@italki) on Aug 11, 2015 at 2:10am PDT Were very thankful and glad that we have such cool teachers, and are really proud to support the esperanto community. italki Learns (about) Esperanto Saluton!
